M-PESA Buy Goods & Services
Buy Goods and Services lets you collect payments from customers via Lipa Na M-PESA — fast, secure, and cashless. Customers can pay for goods and services using M-PESA at businesses that accept Lipa Na M-PESA.
The retail payments service available has 3 distinct options:
- For large retailers
- For retail distribution
- For small merchants
Features
- Head Office: Used by the business owner to manage multiple stores under one organization.
- Store Number: Used by the business owner to operate the till.
- Till Number: Displayed to customers when making payments.
- Notification Number: The mobile number that receives SMS alerts when customers pay.
- Nominated Number: The M-PESA registered line authorized to withdraw funds from the store.
- Finance Number: The main business contact number.
Access Channels
You can access and manage your Buy Goods Till through:
- USSD: Dial *234# (Option 4) from your nominated number to check balance or initiate withdrawals.
- Business App: View and download statements.
- Web Portal: Log in to the M-PESA (G2) portal to check balances and pull statements.
Getting Started
Here’s how to get your Buy Goods and Services Till:
- Apply online at m-pesaforbusiness.co.ke.
- You can also fill out the physical application forms and attach the required documents listed in the Lipa na M-PESA Application Requirements document.

- Once your application is processed (within 24 hours), you’ll receive your Till details via SMS on your nominated number.
Activating Your Till
Once you get your Till details:
- Activate via the App or by dialing *234*4#
- Enter your store number, accept the Terms and Conditions, and you’ll receive your Operator ID and a start PIN via SMS.
- Change your PIN to access the updated menu and start transacting.
Lipa na M-PESA Sticker
You can easily download your customized Buy Goods Till sticker with your store details:
- If you applied online, find it under My Applications on the portal.
- If you applied through another channel, download it here.
Till Notifications
Whenever your customers make payments to your Till, Lipa na M-PESA will send to you an SMS notification. The Till details sent on SMS after application contain the notification mobile number.
- This is the number that receives notifications when customers pay and the SIM card cannot be used to perform outward transactions from the Till, which can only be done via the nominated number.
- To get a physical SIM card for the same number, please proceed to perform a SIM replacement by visiting the nearest care desk or Safaricom Shop.
- You can also choose to receive payment notifications made to the Till being sent to your nominated number.
Secure your Till
Keep your Till and funds safe by following these tips:
- All till transactions will be done via the nominated number through the App or *234# code and must be authenticated using a secret PIN set when activating the till. Please keep the nominated number secured and the PIN secret to you alone and do not share with someone else. PIN Yako, Siri Yako.
- Always confirm payments using the SMS sent to your notification line — don’t rely on other people’s messages.
- You can verify transactions anytime by requesting a statement through the M-PESA Business App or 2344#.
