
George Njuguna (MBS)
Acting Chief Technology Information Officer
George Njuguna is the Director, Digital & Information Technology (CIO) at Safaricom PLC. In his current role as Acting Chief Technology Information Officer, George is responsible for leading the tech team in shaping the technology and digital future of Safaricom, while driving innovation to ensure the availability and reliability of Safaricom services. He is championing and overseeing the evolution of Telecommunications, IT, Financial and Digital Services infrastructure, thereby delivering best-in class products and services. Fostering superior customer experience through digital transformation is also a key focus for him. As a member of the Safaricom Leadership team, George contributes to the overall business strategy both locally and globally.
Before joining Safaricom, George worked at Commercial Bank of Africa as the Head of Information Technology. He has 23 years’ experience in IT, and 18 years’ experience in Banking and Financial Services, specifically in technology, operations, product development, project management, channel management, digital transformation and large-scale implementations.
Over the years, George has held various technical and senior management roles locally, regionally, and internationally. He has received several awards and recognitions throughout his career journey. These include CIO of the Year East Africa (2018), inducted into East Africa CIO Hall of Fame (2019), named one of the Broadband 50 to Watch “A list of influential leaders, innovators and disrupters who are connecting the world” (2021) and in 2022 he received the Vodacom Leadership Award for Living Safaricom’s Purpose to create Inclusion for All, CIO 200 Global Leader Award and recognition among the Top 40 under 40 influential men in Kenya by Business Daily. In 2023, he pioneered and brought to life, the biggest and iconic Engineering Summit in Africa, Safaricom Decode 2.0. He also leads the Industry Digital Talent Program by safaricom in conjunction with several stakeholders in the industry. 2023 culminated with him being awarded Moran of the order of the Burning Spear (MBS) by the President of Kenya.
