Faith Chemutai: The opportunities I have gotten from playing golf

Not once did it ever cross Faith Chemutai’s mind that she would one day become a golfer, an enthusiast of the sport and represent the country on the golf greens.

But her journey on the greens started six years ago when she accompanied her two friends to Kitale Golf Club during the Ladies Open.

Observing how ladies were playing and having a good time at the course the businesswoman developed an interest to learn more about the sport that was “just like holding a stick and hitting a ball.”

She approached some of the lady golfers to learn more.

Faith soon realized that in addition to knowing how to swing and hit right, golf is about interacting and making friends as you walk the course.

Looking back, Faith, who has handicap 2, is amazed at the great opportunities the sport has afforded her:

she represented the country at the Ladies Open tournament during the 2022 Magical Kenya Open held in Vipingo, Kilifi County, a game that put her name on the global map.

She has also won several awards, including the fifth-leg King of the Course award and the Longest Drive Awards in three Safaricom Golf Tour events: Kisumu, Eldoret and Kericho.

But beyond playing, she also got an opportunity to sell golf merchandise such as T-Shirts, shoes, skirts, shorts, trousers and caps at the 2022 Safaricom Golf Tour. The Safaricom Golf Tour, that started off in January 2022 and made up of 16 tournaments across the country, is a platform that seeks to demystify the game which has long been seen as a sport for the elite and position it as one that is accessible for all.
