The annual Groove Awards, which took place on June 1 at the KICC grounds, were nothing short of a glamorous and fun affair. It was a battle for the finest as gospel stars and their fans, who were dressed to the nines, came in their numbers from as early as 4:30pm. The venue was well lit to enhance the ambiance and excitement of the ceremony.
The lively and dynamic MCs Moji of Kelele Takatifu and Dunco ‘Atalaku’ did not disappoint and kept the crowd entertained. They were assisted by Citizen TV’s Kanze Dena in hosting the star-studded event that was broadcast live on K24 and Kameme TV.
It was definitely a big night for Mercy Masika, who made history after she went home with the Female Artiste of the Year award for the third time in a row. She received a second award for Skiza Ringback Tune of the year for her song ‘Shule Yako’.
Gospel Hip Hop Artiste Eko Dydda made an epic return to the gospel front after a short hiatus. He was crowned Male Artist of the Year. He also scooped the Hip Hop Song of the Year award for his song ‘Vidole.’ His fans gave him a standing ovation.
There were wild cheers when Praise and worship band Adawnage was crowned Group of the Year. Their song – ‘Live for You’ also earned them Video of the Year award.

After the release of the hit song ‘Thitima’ in early 2016, it was evident that it would be a contender at the awards and the predictions were spot on. Kymo and Stiga scooped Song of the Year and Afro-pop Song of the Year awards.
Collo, a new entrant in the gospel music scene was a hit with the audience. His hit ‘Bazokizo’ earned him the Gospel Collabo of the Year. The crowd danced to the song as the former Kleptomaniac member walked to the stage to collect his award.
The newly added counties category, which recognizes vernacular artistes, added flavour to the event. Other winners were Eva Mwalili of Milele FM ( Radio Gospel Presenter of the Year). Her show, Gospel Sunday, won Gospel Radio Show of the Year; Angaza Show on KBC won the TV show of the Year. Hopekid walked away with Reggae Song of the Year and Pitson was crowned Songwriter of the Year.
Secular artistes, thespians, actors and comedians joined their gospel counterparts in celebrating their achievements. Kenyan group Sauti Soul congratulated the event organizers for a flawless programme, décor and presentation of awards; sentiments shared by the audience who applauded in apparent agreement.
The social impact brought about by Safaricom’s contribution was evident as the audience listened to testimonials from beneficiaries of the telco’s generosity.
Winners will get fuel worth Sh100, 000 from Shell, one of the awards sponsors. Kenya Airways also offered a return ticket for the winners for a destination of their choice. Mercy Masika and Eko Dydda also got iPhone 7 worth Sh76,000 each plus Safaricom airtime worth Sh10,000.
