When you meet MC Sue and Pengele, they seem like two peas in a pod, completing each other’s sentences.
This is because of the chemistry they have built over the years, having worked together as MCs on the same stage.
Their first gig was promoting M-PESA in 2007.
They were sent to different regions, with MC Sue working in Nairobi, while Pengele was headed to Nyanza.
Their journeys to becoming MCs were different; MC Sue previously worked as a product brand ambassador, while Pengele was a comedian.
“When I was a child, I used to enjoy going to roadshows for Group Africa. I used to go to those roadshows and dance on stage. As I continued to grow, there was a time I took the microphone when I was working as a brand ambassador, and I started talking on the mic, and one guy called told me I have a nice voice, I can become an MC,” said MC Sue(Susan Awuor).
“Starting out, I wasn’t an MC, but I was forced to be after we went for an event as comedians, and there was no MC when we got to the event. So one of my friends told me, because you’re not in a costume, you’ll be the one to announce where we are, so here is the microphone, that’s how I started,” said MC Pengele(Wycliffe Okinda).
After launching M-PESA, Sue and Pengele have worked on many other campaigns with Safaricom, including Shine Kenya, Chapa Dimba, etc.
They sync well, with Sue as the MC and Pengele as the hypeman.
“An MC who can absorb product information, process it, and deliver to an audience, a hypeman is an energetic MC who energises the crowd, cause you might have an MC, but you need hype. So, I work with MC Sue, who is the MC with product information. I don’t focus on that; instead, I focus on hyping the crowd and comparing. So, I take the information I have and what Sue has, then we merge it with the crowd energy,” said MC Pengele.
To grow the industry, Sue and Pengele have opened a firm to mould the next generation of creatives.
