Rookie to champion: How I won the Safaricom Golf Tour

After her breakthrough year, Marion can no longer be called a novice.

Rookie to champion: How I won the Safaricom Golf Tour

Even as she accompanied her husband to Nanyuki Golf Club, Marion Githinji wondered what was so great about the sport.

In a bid to satisfy her curiosity, she signed up and became a consistent player last year. And it paid off.

This year, she was the overall winner of the inaugural Safaricom Golf Tour.

Playing off handicap 37, she beat strong winds and tricky greens on the challenging par 72 PGA Baobab Course at Vipingo Ridge Golf Resort in Kilifi County to emerge victorious.

Golf, she says, is not just about exercise and networking but there is the element of the mental and individual challenge when you are on the fairways.

The Nanyuki Golf Club player is hoping her Tour victory will be an inspiration to other women. Already, her seven-year-old daughter is walking in her steps and hopes to win a junior tournament in the near future.

Marion thanked Safaricom for the well-organized golf tour and lauded the Safaricom Golf Tour’s focus on junior golf as this was pivotal to demystifying the sport from the perception that it is only for the elite.

She hopes that in the future, golf will be more accessible through the use of public golf courses and for increased general support from Kenyan corporates and media.
