Jeremiah Wahome had never sat in a rally car before the shakedown for the 2021 WRC Safari Rally.
He had been selected for the FIA Rally Star programme on the basis of his previous experience working towards racing in Formula 1 and becoming the next Lewis Hamilton.
Now, those ambitions are in the past, and he has new ones, in addition to changing his name from Jeremy to Jeremiah. He has also enjoyed the experience of becoming a rally driver and proudly speaks of having had his first accident, two in fact, with one involving the jolting but safe experience of rolling.
Reflecting on the four rallies he participated in since the unveiling of the sponsorship by Safaricom, Jeremiah says: “I think I went through everything in rallying.”
He had really good rallies, fast rallies, rallies where the terrain was smooth and he could go flat-out with his navigator, Victor Okundi, urging him on, and the disappointment of failing to finish. One of the remarkable features of their first rally together was the camaraderie they developed.
As he looks to continue growing in the sport and having another go at the Safari Rally, Jeremiah is looking to once again push the Ford Fiesta Rally 3 car to its limits, safely of course.
One of his key lessons learnt so far is that rallying is very dynamic, and he has to adjust constantly to the changing environment.
